Debt Advice
Having difficulties paying your debts? Then the first thing we recommend you do is have a look
at the debt self help pack.
This self help pack was written by the National Debt Helpline and is a very good self help guide.
If you are having difficulties making your monthly loan or credit card payments then the first
thing you will need to do is to fill in a personal budget planner. That way you can see all your
income and outgoings in one place. You then need to contact your all lenders as quickly as
possible to explain your current situation.
The sooner you contact them the sooner you will
be able to get the situation sorted out and the more helpful they will be. Once contacted,
your lender will try to work out a solution with you that will make things easier for you
until your financial situation improves.
There are free organisations that are able to offer guidance if you are having debt problems:
- The Citizens' Advice Bureau.
Give them a call and get hold of a copy of their booklet on dealing with debt, and where
possible ask to speak to someone in person. They often have a debt advice specialist
available who will listen and offer constructive help. They will help you compose letters
to your creditors and also be able to make sure you are collecting any benefits you are
entitled to.
- The National Debtline can offer similar help and
can be contacted on 0808 808 4000. This helpline provides FREE CONFIDENTIAL and INDEPENDENT
ADVICE on how to deal with debt problems.
- The Consumer Credit Counselling Service is a charity and can provide free budgeting
advice and self-help packs. They can arrange counselling sessions over the phone, or
face-to-face in certain areas, and negotiate with creditors on your behalf.
One of these organisations should be able to help you with a strategy on the best way to move forward and solve the problem. Whatever approach you take to tackle your debt problem, the most important and most effective thing you can do is to take action straight away. The longer you wait before taking control, the worse the problem will become.
